#About Japanese Milk

  • Information on Milk Production

The thorough management of Japanese dairy farms ensures the delivery of safe and reliable milk and dairy products to consumers.
The overwhelming majority of dairy farming in Japan is family-owned, but in recent years,
advances in dairy farming technology have led to the spread of large-scale farms, particularly in Hokkaido. A cattle traceability system allows details of dairy cows such as the date of birth, sex, breed and place of birth to be checked,
guaranteeing the delivery of safe milk and dairy products even after they have been shipped from the manufacturer.

  • Types of Milk and Dairy Products

About half of Japan's domestic milk production is for drinking purposes, with the remainder being dairy products such as cheese, butter, cream, yoghurt and milk powder.
Hokkaido in particular produces a large number of dairy products. Nutrient-rich dairy products which are processed in various ways add a colourful accent to our dining table.
Yoghurt, in particular, has a beneficial effect on the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, such as controlling cholesterol level and lowering blood pressure, in addition to regulating the bowel environment.

Japanese Milk in Statistics

◆Japanese milk and dairy products may be exported to your city too.

Dairy products made from Japanese raw milk are also delivered to consumers abroad. Japan's overall exports of milk and dairy products overseas were approximately 5,077 tonnes in 2012, but by 2022 they amounted to 41,832 tonnes, an eight-fold increase in ten years, mainly due to exports to Asia. The increase in exports of infant formula and ice-cream and ice-candy products is particularly significant. In 2012, the export volume of infant formula was approximately 1,002 tonnes, but by 2022 it was approximately 9,252 tonnes, an increase of more than nine times. As for ice-cream and ice-candy products, the export volume in 2022 was approximately 8462 tonnes, a six-fold increase compared to 2012, when it was approximately 1,349 tonnes. In 2022, exports of milk were at around 8,325 tonnes and sweetened skimmed milk powder were at around 11,434 tonnes, an increase of more than seven times from around 1,490 tonnes in 2021. Japanese dairy products such as butter and cheese are also increasing their exports to overseas markets year by year. These statistics show that Japanese dairy products are loved by consumers at home and abroad.

◆Why nutrient-rich milk and dairy products are served in Japanese school lunches.

Milk and dairy products are known for their high nutritional value. In particular, they contain a good balance of various nutrients, including high-quality protein, vitamin B complex, and minerals such as calcium, which is often lacking in modern diets. Specifically, a bottle of milk (200 mL) contains approximately 227 mg of calcium, which meets approximately 45% of the WHO recommended dietary intake. In addition to milk and dairy products, other food sources of calcium include small fish (with bones), shrimps (with shells), soya beans and leafy vegetables. However, milk has the highest absorption rate of calcium entering the body through the small intestine compared to vegetables and small fish. For example, the calcium absorption rate of vegetables is about 19%, whereas that of milk is said to be about 40% (Uenishi et al., 1998). Milk, which is easily consumed and has a high absorption rate, is highly valued as a source of calcium.

#About J-Milk

J-milk is a cross-industry organisation that brings together dairy producers, dairy farmers and milk retailers who make up the milk supply chain in Japan. In order for the Japanese dairy industry to contribute to the health and well-being of people at home and abroad through a stable supply of domestically produced milk and dairy products, and to build strong relationships of trust with consumers, it is essential that "the parties involved in the milk supply chain maintain mutually beneficial and stable relationships". To achieve this goal, J-milk provides information to dairy industry players and “milk influencers” to help them solve common problems in the dairy industry and improve the value of milk and dairy products.
